Symptoms of OSA

Some of the signs of OSA include snoring, choking, gasping, insomnia, bruxism (clenching and grinding teeth), long pauses and restlessness while sleeping.

Some signs that a person has OSA may include excessive daytime fatigue or sleepiness during routine activities (such as driving, reading, watching TV), bloodshot eyes and/ or puffy eyes, dry mouth (from excessive breathing),dark circles, sore throat (from snoring), morning headaches, memory loss, mental fogginess, concentration problems, cognitive impairment, depression, and personality changes.

A sleep trained dentist may observe other clues that a person has OSA such as worn down teeth and gum loss (from bruxism), broken teeth and fillings, redness and soft palate (from snoring), deep palate, enlarged and scalloped tongue, enlarged uvula, enlarged tonsils, coated tongue (from mouth breathing and snoring), and sore head and neck muscles.

Treatments for OSA

You cannot afford not to get tested if you have signs and symptoms of OSA. The quality and quantity of your life depends on it! OSA patients are much more likely to suffer from strokes, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, hypertension, and diabetes. We have seen some patients spiral downward into a hole that is difficult to climb out of. These individuals need to seek help immediately. As for any disease, the best time to seek help is early on as it becomes more likely for signs and symptoms to reverse. The human body has an amazing ability to heal itself as long as the insults are removed.

The key to optimal treatment lies in proper diagnosing. To do this, one should obtain an overnight sleep study (polysomnography) from a qualified sleep physician/sleep lab. This is because that in addition to mild, moderate, severe OSA, there are many other types of sleep disorders such as central sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy. No matter how knowledgeable or experienced a sleep health professional claims to be, there is no way of diagnosing all the sleep disorders without a sleep study.
